Animal Welfare
Barmount Feedlot is committed to ensuring that the health and welfare of our animals is second to none. We make certain that all of our animals are treated with respect and handled in a humane and ethical manner. We do this through best practice animal welfare and husbandry processes including:
- Quality supervision of animals – all pens are checked and interacted with daily.
- Regular staff training with feedlot veterinarians and nutritionists.
- Appointment of a dedicated animal health and welfare officer to ensure ongoing training and compliance of the latest animal health and welfare practices are enforced.
- Low stress cattle handling techniques adopted throughout the feedlot.
- Cattle pens that have ample room for livestock to freely roam and have space for movement and interaction. All pens include clean drinking water, shade structures, drainage and slip resistant feed bunks and water troughs. Pen floors, bunks and water troughs are cleaned regularly.
- Fresh feed provided to cattle daily that is continually monitored and tested to ensure all cattle are receiving the right balance of energy, protein, and vitamins.
- Dedicated hospital pen for appropriate assessment, monitoring and specialised treatment of any sick or injured cattle by our on-call feedlot veterinarian.
- Daily acclamation of starter pens that are most susceptible to illness.
- Compliance with stringent animal health and welfare policies set out by the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme (NFAS) which is independently audited annually.
