Who We Are

Barmount Feedlot is a proudly family owned and operated beef cattle feedlot, with over 40 years of custom feeding experience. We pride ourselves on delivering first class cattle performance, adopting the latest innovative cattle feeding technology with state-of-the-art facilities.

Barmount Feedlot is fully accredited with AUS-MEAT through the National Feedlot Accreditation Scheme (NFAS) and the European Union Cattle Accreditation Scheme (EUCAS). We have capacity for up to 10,000 Standard Cattle Units (SCU) for a varying range of cattle markets.

The feedlot is situated on a 7,500 hectare property where we also grow and harvest some of our high-quality commodities used within the feedlot.

Our Story

Barmount was purchased by brothers William Robert and John Francis Conaghan in December 1949. Purchase price was 4,800 pounds or one shilling and fourpence an acre. A breeding herd of 600 high quality Hereford cows were relocated from Cracow in early 1950 and the Conaghan’s took up residence on 1 April 1950. The property consisted of very heavy Brigalow and softwood scrub and downs country and flooded coolabah and gum flats. There were no improvements.

Son of William, Robert (Bob) and his wife Rosemary built their first feedlot yard in 1982 and fed 100 steers on sorghum, hay and concentrates. Gradually the lot was increased to feeding around 700 head by 1989. In November 1990 they took in the first steers of other owners and began their first custom feeding operation. Barmount was well on its way towards establishing itself as a reputable feedlot delivering consistency with respect to quality and quantity regardless of seasons.

Following Bob’s retirement in 2002, the feedlot was managed in partnership by Rosemary and sons Philip and Sean until 2019 when the brothers procured the business. In December 2021 Philip and his wife Lynise proudly took over sole ownership and have welcomed the return of their 3 adult children; Andrew, Regan and Tessa to Barmount.

Our Location

Barmount Feedlot is conveniently located halfway between Rockhampton and Mackay, approximately 110km northwest of Marlborough in Central North Queensland, Australia. Barmount Feedlot is in a prime position with full road train access to Australia’s live export market as well as some of Queensland’s major abattoirs including JBS, Thomas Borthwick & Sons, Teys and Signature Beef which are all located within 220km from the feedlot.
